I've been crocheting these felted neck pieces for a few years now.
Dipping in and out of love with crochet, it's always free form.

I love fibre jewelery
and have sold many pieces through
Object Gallery and the National Gallery Shop.
But now Object is changing and it's time to revamp the look.
my hulk inspired crochet bangle
People ask me how I design the shapes.
The secret is: I cant read a pattern,
so I make it up.
It's waaay harder than it looks,
especially after being entranced
by the work of Lana Bragina, below
Lana Bragina is a graphic designer
from Hamburg who is also a wicked free form crocheter.
She only picked up the crochet hook a couple of years ago.
Her shop sells quickly,
but Lana's flickr site is tantalizingly torturous to contemplate.
Using a tiny 1.25 mm crochet hook,
I must have un ravelled work so many times,
my brain is about to follow.
Achieving the shape seen in the imagination
is often lost in translation by the hands.
I am patiently practicing,
working with tiny hooks and cotton thread like cobwebs.
It will be a project to take travelling.
Light and transportable,
perhaps I will return with a new skill.
Meanwhile the felted wool neck pieces
keep me warm from winter.
I've been playing around with presentation.
Clearly the one above is not cutting it.
Clearly the one above is not cutting it.
You need a live model.
A model reflecting the unique avante garde position and designer
high end of the market you are pitching to.
.
These kind of shots get loads of air play on Etsy,
but not many sales.
When in doubt bung them on yer boyfriend or dog.
Maybe if I shoot the hulk bracelet on a black background.
That will bring the art to the cart.
How does a hulk colored crochet bangle get taken seriously?

I'd reverse that and ask how a Hulk-colored crochet bangle NOT get taken seriously.
ReplyDeleteBut, I'm also a comic geek.
I love that orange one with the tubey things. It reminds me of two things. The creatures in Naked Lunch and a cow milking machine! My grandfather was a dairy farmer and I liked to hang out and watch him hook up the ladies in the wee hours of the morning. Very sci-fi.
ReplyDeleteI like your new banner thingy & updated profile
ReplyDeleteIn love with your crochet art! Absolute LOVE!
ReplyDeleteThe many strand look really appeals to me. Such gorgeous colours and Dog carries them off well. Oh, and so does Don :-)
ReplyDeleteYou must watch the programs being aired by Grayson Perry here in Blighty at the moment - Channel 4, 'In the Best Possible Taste'. He is analysing taste through the class system, I am looking forward to finding the key to taste...but then perhaps we are all singing a slightly different tune, which adds to the harmony (now I am getting above myself!!).
ReplyDeleteYour neck pieces work on so many levels, great with black or rocked with a multicoloured ethnic look.
Hah, Bruce is taking it all very seriously. Some interesting thoughts here and some very Unserious crochet. Like!
ReplyDeleteOn another topic, will you be 'decorating' the Eiffel Tower or the Arc de T?
Seeing these makes me wish I was tall and slender so I could wear a big bunch of them with a long black dress and biker boots.

ReplyDeleteI picture you wrapping the Berlin Reichstag in crochet, with a 1.25 mm hook - wouldn´t that be something... just think of the PR possibilities...;)
ReplyDeleteGreat new banner! Love the crocheted adornments. Your boyfriend and your dog tie in adorableness.
ReplyDeleteI don't know, but who cares anyway with a dog that precious! I love the direction things are going with this work, Grrl. -sus
ReplyDeleteThese look vibrant and fun, however Bruce looks less than impressed about it all.
ReplyDeleteOh you clever people. You make me sick. In a nice, non-smelly way.
ReplyDeleteoh these are loverly! I'm in an insane-making-cowl thing and it will be hot here soon (I hope) but that is all I want to do - knit cowls. till my fingers bleed. ah well.
ReplyDeleteBy pricing it really, REALLY high!
ReplyDeleteI also have no skill for patterns. Even if I have a plan, I veer off into the unknown. I am in awe of Lana too. It is difficult to work at that scale but her work looks like she does it with ease. I like your models! And your jewelry!!

ReplyDeleteDivine, but remember not to put your crochet hooks in your hand luggage!
ReplyDeletereally - is there any NEED for a Hulk inspired bracelet to be taken seriously? You march to the beat of your own drummer grrl so you can hook to the beat of your own - errm - well you know what I mean. Hail to the freeform and all independent marchers ... Course it is a toss up who looks best wearing your art but I am pleased to see that Bruce did not pull the Zoolander pose (no offence Don). Have fun on your travels!

ReplyDeleteYou're a free form maverick Queen-stuff the patterns, your brain is all we need! Utterly gorgeous...and particularly taken by your model's poses! ;0)
