Not sure how long my fifteen minutes of fame
was on the front page of Etsy -
but it's enough keep the puff my balloon for some time.
With the new year, summer has truly arrived in Sydney.
That means less time in the stifling hot computer room
and more time in the studio room actually making.
I dug through the wall of never ending art supplies,
hauled them out, sang happy 10 year old birthday
to some lucky ones,
stroked a few more fondly
and passed a bucketload on.
The house has become intolerably clean.
No wading ankle deep in dog hair tumblebunnies,
or discoveries of semi digested dinner in the hallway.
The comforting jingle jingle jingle of dog tags
as the morning scratch and lick begins.
It was all too much.
We are now a hotel for dogs.
We have become minders for Don't Fret Pet .
It's a company offering home accommodation
to dogs whose parents go on holiday.
It beats a cage in a boarding kennel
and the prices are competitive.
Our Inner West kennel has
- a private door leading to the shady and grassy back play area. No holding it in waiting for the humans to wake up
- Water bubbler for fresh water to attack, (doubles as a water feature for humans.)
- Upstairs bed with toys
- Downstairs bed with other toys
- Front yard bed with view
- Backyard bed that humans call their day bed, but is really a higher up bed.
- Couch privileges even if you are a great Dane and take up half of it.
- Designer grass patch to poop on
- Peep holes in the fence to watch other dogs walk past and bark at them.
- Doggy Day spa around the corner
- Doggy companionship with optional romance package.
So far only three guests,
but the joy is great.
One guest took up the romance package,
falling in love with studly dog next door.
They rumbled and played the whole time and
poor old studly dog howled when she went home.
It's win win here for two lonely dog parents,
whose house is too big and clean
but who cant bear to think of a permanent replacement.
(As if there could ever be one.)

I lost my own dear boy in November and I share your feelings of the house being painfully silent and clean..( I have yet to remove the slobber from the windows as I know it's never going to be replaced) I have adopted two old cats that were urgent need of a home....but I love your doggy guests...
ReplyDeleteOh, Denise, I'm sorry for your loss. It sounds like a good approach for the time being.
ReplyDeleteI'm currently oscillating to hate side of the love/hate thing with etsy. Does the world need a ring with a frikkin doily on it?
Agh, I'm too old.
Woo Hoo Yoo Too.
ReplyDeleteWell done.
Excellent.
LERVE that idea.
If I had a dog I'd bring him to yours.
Love ya.
you beautiful people. sounds lush.
ReplyDeletemay need to book in 2 couch potatoes.
wishing you well for this year.
x
Jill
What a lovely thing to do for these doggers and their families!
ReplyDeleteNew Year Happies to you!
This is so great to know. We're planning a long trip early in 2013 - I know, we're planners over here - and we've been agonising over what to do with our hound. He's a needy little soul and getting on too. Great to know there is such a thing as a doggy hotel. I can't wait to tell my partner.
ReplyDeleteGosh what a fantastic idea. I'd love to be a part-time doggy Mum. I need another dog too, but can't imagine finding such a good one again.
ReplyDeleteWhat a very clever idea... well done for taking it up..
ReplyDeletehugs
looking at your pictures, i suspect if G were to holiday at your place, she'd come back a pampered princess.
ReplyDeleteany thoughts on getting another [not replacement] at some time? fostering dogs from the pound is always a good idea. no money in it though.
btw, congrats on your 15 minutes! x
We loved Hotel for Dogs! When we see it again, we'll be able to say that we know someone who does that!
ReplyDeleteBrilliant! Good-on-ya!
ReplyDeleteThis doggie hotel idea has to be one of THE BEST I've ever heard of...so great that you are able to do this. And such a lovely way to bring the joys (oh, and a lot of the other stuff too) of canine companionship into your home after your best pal left you. Win, win indeed. Lucky woofers who have the both of you to look after them.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fabulous idea! :)
ReplyDeletesuch a great idea
ReplyDeleteDo you adopt adults by any chance?
ReplyDeleteAaawghhh...my Oakey would love to visit your Doggie Hotel. What a great idea and I dare say lots of fun for you all.
ReplyDeleteThere will be doggie fluff balls floating around your house again before you know it.
Jacky xox
that is such a cool thing to do.I know my dogs would love something like that. Actually they may not want to come home.
ReplyDeleteYup, it aint for the money - more for the love.
ReplyDeleteMinders get a small amount only, basically enough to shout us two coffees on the morning hound walk and maybe a cookie to share.
It's the love...
now to clean the great dane slobber off the roof.
I think only people who have lost and loved their dog understand the pain of that loss. I love the dog hotel idea, our little one is coming towards the end (faster than I would like) and we are considering only getting older rescue dogs after, just so they can have a little love toward the end, but now I've seen this maybe we could doggy sit for people who come on holiday:-)
ReplyDeleteI'm sure you'll have many return customers. You may find them sneaking back when the parents are at work.
ReplyDeleteFantastic idea and I bet the doggy guests love staying with you!
ReplyDeleteWhat a brilliant idea!!! Baxter isn't ever replacable, I know. But borrowing other dogs for a bit, I can totally dig!!! Foster parenting ROOLS!!
ReplyDeleteCouch privies! I think that Great D could stand at the stove and whip up a great breakfast. Wow.
ReplyDeleteAdore your green word trees and your writing, always love to read your posts.
Happy New Year, grrrl.....singing happy 10th birthday to art supplies...wish I could force myself to follow your lead. How wonderful to share your love with boarders - lucky dogs!
ReplyDeleteYour window of fame on ETSY, congratulations. It was not just the product but the pose. What better service could you offer, bringing peace of mind to pet parents, comfort and joy to dogs, company and some familiar untidiness to yourselves. Genius. Happy New Year...the optional romance feature is truly inspired. xo
ReplyDeletethe dogtel is a brilliant notion. i'm in agreement, besties can never be replaced. although i'm hoping someday when the time is right another dog will appear on my horizon, give me an enquiring look, do that front paw stretch thing with head on one side to indicate s/he might be up for a game and then settle down beside me on the sofa. we'll see. meanwhile, wishing you a Happy New Year...
ReplyDeleteYour blog made me so happy. First, I am thrilled for you about the Etsy front page. That is huge and your balloon should remain inflated for quite some time. Second, I am so glad you have doggies aplenty clicking around your home. Just an all around good and happy blog post. Smile.
ReplyDeleteThis is such a brilliant idea, and your Inner West Kennel sounds much nicer than most of the hotels I've stayed in.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on you Etsy moment! It seems the year is full of promise for you.
Oh, my heart would be full every minute, and near on to crying with delight. How could I say goodbye to them? I guess I could.
ReplyDeleteNice looker on the sofa, by the way. No, I won't say which.
This is a great idea, you genius, you!!!!! Great photos. And if you take in bitches who are suddenly tossed out for a night, that's a comforting thought, personally.
Gosh, Buster would come to your lovely hotel in a flash if that were at all possible.
ReplyDeleteYou have everything a pup could desire.
Happy New Year!
oxox
i am over here in cold florida
ReplyDeleteattempting to follow your lead--->
"""The house has become intolerably clean"""
but had

& see your wee trees!
{{ they make me smile

It's really great to spend holiday vacation with this such kind of accommodation.
ReplyDeleteTel Aviv Events Should Never Be Missed Out
What a great idea - sounds like dog heaven. Love the photos. All the best for 2012. Lesley
ReplyDeleteYou're such sweethearts, sounds like pooch heaven! Book me in if there's any thoughts of one day turning it into a hotel for creative old retired party guests.
ReplyDeleteMega congrats on your much deserved Etsy-ness! Good things happen to good people, you're the absolute BEST. xo.
Was so sorry to read when you'd lost your mate, I've been there a few times now and know just how hard it is, even years later.
ReplyDeleteBut if you need any doggie hair tumbleweeds for reminiscing purposes, I've got PLENTY at my place. They're German Shepherd, so really good quality and there's so much of it I could even send you regular deliveries!
You are right , there could never be a replacement but I was ready to take another dog after about 2 years of my previous baby passing away. They are all so different in their own right that its hard not to love them, even if you still miss you previous one. Its good not to rush though.
ReplyDeleteGreat news... I once considered taking in dogs, for up to 3 months, while they try to find a permanent place for them, but didn´t like the way it was organized (too german, perhaps...) - now I´m home away from home for a cat... - all best for 2012...
ReplyDeleteare u gonna do one for humans too?
ReplyDeletei wonderful, couragious, positive, warm post
as we'd expect from u
and those photos are awesome (even if you did have some very photogenic subjects :) )

I can see why it was on the front of etsy. A very cute and memorable image.
ReplyDeleteGrrl,
ReplyDeleteI was wanting to come and stay myself after reading all hat....
sounds positively 6 star to me. You're amazing!
I'm with you on the re-ordering of home and studio bit! Been madly at it for days...have'nt reached the order yet... still in chaos but getting there!
Hurrah for you on Etsy front page...of course well deserved!
A brilliant 2012 to you!
Good for you both!
ReplyDeleteI so wish we had such a service in WA.
Brilliant - can Boodle come? It's a bit far I know but he is mighty partial to daybeds. Hmm, I can't seem to muster any cleaning gumption...there are far too many brown downy fluff balls wafting around the place..I'll get to them later...
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year and congrats on the Etsy top of the bill coup, marvelous I say,
Sarah -x-
Your words make me smile and hurt at the same time. I'm so glad you're enjoying some four-legged, furry company.
ReplyDeleteYou deserve etsy front page each week! Love to be your guest dog :) Saw your tumblr archive today, really loved the eye candy. All the best to you in 2012!
ReplyDeleteI just discovered your blog and am so scared to read backwards, because I know from this bit that you've lost your canine soulmate. I want to both hide from your pain, and give you a big "oh my god i understand" hug. i don't know you but i know dog love. i'll keep reading. my thoughts are with you, really truly.
ReplyDeletexox,
