Mary Emma Hawthorne

I am in a small country town
in New Zealand.
With a dear friend
whose mother passed away.
The air is full of sweet flowers
and there is calm now.
Sharing the calm
are the quiet compositions
of Mary Emma Hawthorne.
She uses covers of vintage books
as her collage substrate.
I love this one
with a little needlecase attached.

Mary Emma Hawthorne describes her work in ten words:
Delicate, intentional & unintentional, subtle, evolving, provoked from my recent past.
"I just like to add subtle collage
elements at this point in time.
less is more and just add in some
small drawings as well,
and let the negative space be as important."
Back soon,

  4. Her use of negative space is beautifully 'delicate' as it's described. It frames and guides the eye through.

  5. Condolences to your friend.

You have given me another artist to be smitten with. I think I'm tempted to call her 'negative space' positive.

  6. I love the blues and greens. They remind me of fragile eggshells and delicate feathers. Dreamy.

  9. Love the usage of the birds.
My thoughts to you, your friend, and her family.

  10. As she describes them, the "perfect bird images" convey so much, symbols with shifting definitions. There is a hushed tone to her work, the lowered voices one would expect in the presence of life's somber moments. The white space is a place to stop and rest.

  16. what a beautiful and sincere style. Those words could apply to you as well, my friend. When my husband died suddenly at age 37, it was my best friend who flew to my side and kept me from total darkness. I shall never forget. I know that being there is the most important thing. Just being there.
