Knitting is for Pussies

Known only by her last name,

Olek sports mermaid hair and multiple piercings.

She says, “Knitting is for pussies”

and will crochet anything that moves.

After leaving Poland with nothing

but a back pack, she wanted to bring

life and color to her new environment – New York.

She crochets at a prolific rate,

using one stitch and acrylic wool.

“ I open the door of my studio, and I work.

Someone said…it might have been Chuck Close:

“Inspiration is for amateurs. I go to work”.

" This is my motto.
I work.
Every day I have to come up with a new idea.
Every day I have to produce something.
A loop after a loop.
Hour after hour my madness becomes crochet."

Olek will crochet everything that enters her space.

Sometimes it’s a text message,

a medical report, found objects.

Her crocheted bikes
installed around New York
have become iconic.

and she is known for
crochet performances,
where dancers wear her all in one outfits.

  1. I like her kookiness... thanks for bringing her to my attention.
I'm just about to embark on learning to crochet and am excited for the madness that may follow.

Happy Spring Time... it's a beautiful madness all on it's own x

  2. PS... i'm too much of a pleasure junkie to ever produce creations in that manner - if it was to transpire into work I would have to resign.

  3. proves that there is no truth in saying,
"I'd crochet/knit something, but I don't have anything to make."

I hope all is going well.

  4. Very kooky and wonderful. I followed the link and watched the video (Art in odd places) of people's reactions. That was fun! I also enjoyed deciding whether its a male or female in the suit by watching the way the crochet people strode down the street.

  6. Astonishing and wonderful. I love her ethos which reminds me of a quotation from Peter De Vries: 'I only write when I'm inspired, so I see to it that I'm inspired every morning at nine o'clock.'

Off to see her site now, thanks for the links.

  10. Wild. What energy!

I'd be afraid to sleep over her house-- might wake up in a hammock or a cacoon or a wooly skin.

    So cool

  11. Amazing synchronicity-just as I start to explore the world of crocheting some more, with fear and trepidation, this post materialises!

  14. Oh My God. Another "Full Speed Ahead" artist. These people are amazing but make me feel like I am the ultimate Snail Woman. can I BE any slower?
I love her work ethic. Thanks for pointing us in this direction. Seems like you two are Soul Sisters.

  15. I love the printer one. I can't tell if the body is getting eaten or if it's coming out of the printer.

  16. Way too clever. Stunning. Puts my Granny (sort-of-square) Squares to shame.

  18. I love that this is my seond "exposure" to her work in the last week...a friend of mine sent me some images of her work, thinking (correctly) that I'd enjoy them, but didn't know who the artist was!

  22. Inspiration is for amateurs. Well, no farting about here. I sometimes get all cranky about prompts being necessary to work, my unpleasant, critical side. Completely extraordinary...as I am not one of them, I can stand in amazement and admiration at those truly possessed by their art. BTW, did I miss you at Jenny's website...I thought I caught every week but may not have? xoxo
