Blog guilt?
Is that like fat guilt,
dust bunny guilt, or
even Crazy Jane's nude doll guilt?
or the guilt you have when dog looks imploringly
at the last quarter of your bikkie?
I refuse to succumb to blog guilt.
It will be shuffled down the list

Ok here's what you said:

So there you have it - can you think of more?

Ok here's what you said:
words
- Poor spelling/grammar drives me up the wall. I've completely given up blogs because of it.
- Likewise - crappy spelling and grammar or loooooong screeds without photos unless it's a scintillating topic.
- Short screeds without photos is ok.
- Interesting blog photos are good!
- Overly-complicated prose intended to impress and/or convert the reader – don’t like.
- The best writing the most straightforward, and allows for a reader to enter into discussion.
- Pics too small that you HAVE to click on to see. I usually don't.
- Pics so big they take ages to load.
- I want my eye candy right there on the page.
gadgets
- too many gadgets and snowfall and cursor-traces take my interest away
I don't like it when there is music as soon as I click on.
- I would like the choice of listening or not.
- My computer does like it either.
- Takes too long and I don't have much time.
- I forget to turn the sound down and then get busted at work.
- It's usually music you'd claw your way out of a cement box to get away from anyway.
copyright
- The other thing that has made me un-follow a blog is when the author has gone privacy mad and added the copyright banner to every single post. Isn't having the statement clearly marked once on the side bar of the page enough to get the message home?
- Don’t flatter yourself, the image may not be that good anyway.
- You can’t really stop them taking it if they want, but I hope it’s just good blog manners to ask first.
awards
- I am so glad this phase seems to have passed.
- Comments are much more meaningful.
- They remind me of some kind of creepy chain letter.
emoticons
- - those icky smiley face!
- Anyone who uses the letters L and O and another L to mean laughing so that folks can hear you.
- Initials to signify one's dearest connections - just don't!
- Lolcat speak - it's a lazy way of writing
security
- The rigmarole of leaving a comment on some blogs is a hassle
- The word verification, choose an id, type in your mama's maiden name and give a sample of your dna to leave a comment thing gets to me sometimes.
- Hate when people threaten to sue me over blog comments - as if!
paid ads- - makes me switch off the most is paid advertising on blogs.
- There is nothing worse than visiting a blog full of wonderful artwork or creativity surrounded by ugly intrusive adverts for tummy tucks, fat busting pills and teeth whitening.
- I think lots of adverts put me off a blog as well
blog guilt
- I feel guilty if I haven't posted in awhile.
- I feel bad if i don’t post regularly.
- I know I should keep up, but things in my life are more important right now.
- - my issue is my own difficulties in posting regularly, feeling anxiety about it.
- - my problem is how long it takes to create a post - and that's due to pictures and perfectionism.
- Blog pressure - self imposed
- I hate thinking I am not making a connection with anybody on my blog, that there are just things called words and pictures there but nobody feels anything looking at them. It's disheartening to think about....
- I’d hate to think nobody was listening
image still by run wake
whining
- people that lament their depression and hard times....zzzzz..I have my own problems....
- when people write in the comments and you can totally TELL that they didn't read your post they scanned it or got to like the third photo and wrote a comment with what they THINK your post was about !
- Drive thru comments, anyone that leaves just one word, like “AWESOME” what does that mean, anyway?
- Giveaways that won’t post internationally. Sure it might cost a little bit more to post but it is a wonderful gesture and promotes the right spirit of blogging.
- Another thing that annoys me is a blogger who auto replies to comments! ugh
So there you have it - can you think of more?
Dont hold back now.

Well, I certainly am guilty of smiley faces and lol :) Mostly because I am laughing out loud when I'm typing. My number one pet peeve is music that just comes on when you go to the site -- grrr to that one. The little tiny pictures also annoy me......
ReplyDeleteAWESOME POST, DUDE! Cuteness!!!!!
ReplyDeleteHeh.
My main objection to the music thing is that it distracts from the actual post.
And, I may have mentioned it before, red backgrounds with white type, second least favorite – black backgrounds with white type.
Gee, I enjoyed having it snow on my blog in December.
ReplyDeleteI prefer a blog to load quickly which does require no music and no ads. Mainly I appreciate all the lovely, artful creative blogs I visit. I like the bloggyhood!
AWESOME!(;-)
ReplyDeleteI love these images! what a great find - hmmmm, blogs, well, I just visit the ones that don't annoy me - seems to be something out there for everyone :)
ReplyDeleteMmmm... great to see what annoys people out there in blogland. Must admit, the blogs with lots of ads and music take too long to load and I often dont wait (time is limited with two men in the house also wanting to use "my" computer). Love some of the music, but I prefer a blog to load quickly too.
ReplyDeleteGreat images, thanks for sharing.
Jacky xox
Music on blogs. Annoying.
ReplyDeleteGoogle ads all over the place. Annoying.
People leaving a comment saying they have visited you blog and you should go and follow theirs. - Don't tell me what to do!
But i loved all the pictures in this post.
LOL! AWESOME!
ReplyDeleteI switch off immediately if there is too much text, unless its broken up with pics/graphics.
Maybe thats a sign that my brain is now only geared to bite size chunks of digestable information? Yikes - twitter here I come.
Music - yes I switch that off too.
Also blogs where the background is too big & bold & interferes with my ability to easily see the foreground information.
yes yes and yes!!!
ReplyDelete!
ReplyDeleteI agree with the copyright thing!! I'm guessing that people are smart enough to assume image copyright belongs to the blog owner (unless otherwise stated!) and if they're criminally minded enough to pinch the image, f**k 'em and feed 'em fish.
ReplyDeleteI'm afraid comment #3 stole my comment.
ReplyDeleteFunny how this all happens, and how we all see it unfold.
I must apologize for my background and choice of colors ; (
Creative post and the illustrations are similar to the Dick And Jane books we grew up on.
Oh, for awhile I too have found that having to comment every day in order for people to leave a comment on my blog, is very old. I did a short post on that a week or 2 ago myself.
I'd rather anyone comment when they feel like it, knowing a few peeks look anyway.
Anyway, Cheers 2 U!
sorry, it was comment # 4.
ReplyDeletesorry 4 the confusion and dbl comment.
I am also guilty of LOL and smiley faces - as a kind of computer shorthand!!! Some days, I would love just a one word comment on my post - just to know someone dropped in and read me!!! Sometimes that is all the time I have - so many blogs, so little time!!! I really hate "captcha" when leaving comments- I am thinking of starting a new language with it!!!
ReplyDeleteI adore your vintage images - that was a great find!!!

ReplyDeleteI don't like it when a blog takes too long to load for whatever reason but everything seems fast now days compared to when I had wind up which I endured for 2 long, long years. I must have had the patience of Job.
ReplyDeleteWhat annoys me are whiners who whine about whining, if you don't like something, move on- it's a large blogworld out there...quit whining.
ReplyDeletePretty much agree with all the "hates". I use smilies and lol's more in my comments/responses to comments, I think, than in my posts. I think.
ReplyDeleteAnother pet peeve ... posting frequency. Too much is just as bad as too little.
oh. Oh. OH! Saying you have BIG news. But you can't say anything. Top Secret! Then don't freakin' say anything. *sheesh*
Sooooo interesting and informative! I'm guilty of the music coming on right away, but there is a way to fix that. Also guilty of the snow! It just seems fitting seeing I live in a cold snowy state. I don't care for bloggers not posting comments until they are screened first! We stop by Blogs because we like what youv'e done, to share feed back and ideas, not to leave some thing nasty or a bad taste! Thank You for sharing, I will certially fix my music.
ReplyDeleteA fun read.
ReplyDeleteI don't like overuse of swear words, or when people write an entire post in stream of consciousness in phoenetic spelling... Did I even spell that right?
I really, really don't like it that blogger spell checker trys to correct my English grammar with the American spelling. I'm sure there is a way to amend this somewhere.
I fully agree (plus: baby photos...)
ReplyDeleteWhat a prize!!!Lucky you found it to treasure!
ReplyDeletePrizes dislikes..whining, too much personal stuff, too many photos, not enough photos, not enough colour and interest, too much navel gazing and self congratulation, bad spelling and grammar and accepting comments ad infinitum but never making a return call!
{{ more belly laughs }}
ReplyDeletei just canNOT stop...
hope that is not disturbing
This should be required reading for all bloggers. Great post...love the wording and the images. So funny...but so true too! I added a link to this post on my Inspiration Station icon on my blog.
ReplyDeleteA genuine tutorial for the blogger sitting at home pulling who-knows-what out of her head. One day there will be illustration; for now words (oh help me, spelled correctly, used correctly...my nightmare is missed blunders)are what I have. And always overjoyed to be one of your links. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteJust thinking some of the same things recently... I blog when I want about what I want now. Sometimes it's several days in a row, sometimes not. No blog guilt here, even if I used to have the ol' lol goin' on.
ReplyDeleteOops, I am a linguist AND a proofreader/editor. Guess I should put the ending letters on those above words, eh?
Second thought, nah.
Take care.

Reading your blog was like looking into my own mind! Great post. I just started my own blog and I don't think it is going to be annoying to people, but very addictive for me!
ReplyDeleteThank-you
R. Marshall
Hhmmm - just don't read the blogs that are annoying - change channels.I like lots of photos. And cute images like the ones you have used. I used to do guilt but now I ahve a mantra:
ReplyDelete"Bubble Bubble,
Toil and Trouble,
P#@s off guilt,
On the Double"
(apologies to the Bard)
Loving this post. You have courage and to quote a famous Hollywood writer: "Babe?...you've got gumption!"
ReplyDeleteI myself am not a huge fan of the random recipe. If it's a food blog, you know it's coming. If not, can we just skip it?
May I come back and add to this when I think of fifty MORE things in the shower tomorrow?
Comments.
ReplyDeleteLeaving comments makes the author of the comment happy...but what about the recipient. Am I insane?
I do put music on my blog once in a blue moon but I always put a disclaimer at the top so people can buzz off or turn the volume down straight away. Usually it is very relevant to the entry, AND my MUM likes it. After a few posts I usually remove the music from the blog entry.
ReplyDeleteI find the biggest put off is someone moaning about not blogging enough, lots of ads. I refuse to put ads on my blog despite paid offers.
Great post :)
I love these images! So much fun and I will be stealing them I think. Nah, I won't be because I really only put my own pics on my blog. That is one reason I have a blog. I hate the inordinate amount of time that I waste on blogs - oooh, that is wicked. It is all my own fault I realize but why do people make their blogs so interesting? It is just plain mean. I think I'll start a class action suit. Want in?
ReplyDeleteUgh, ugh and another UGH on the whole "lol" (and the like) thing. It ties in to the poor grammar/spelling being a HUGE turn-off for me. People's grasp of the language...and how to use it correctly...is already failing, why would we want to intentionally butcher it even further??
ReplyDeleteCharlie does it when he texts me, just to annoy me. But I forgive him because he's cute. If occasionally intentionally annoying.
wow grrrl, you did it this time! great post. i enjoy the blogs i have saved - and haven't had much time to branch out - will get there though.
ReplyDeletei misspell words all the time and even leave some out - there was a blog group ganging up on me one time - it's usually a signal that i'm tired but want desperately to post or respond. at least you haven't received any of those weird investment advertisements on your blog - NOT THAT's ANNOYING!
this post brings to mind one of my favorite quotes:
a writer can survive anything but a typo - oscar wilde
i miss bloggyworld but hope to be back soon
oops! i did it again. i meant to write NOW THAT's ANNOYING and it really is - excuse though...it's 3:52 a.m. Texas time - off to bed finally. i have a long day tomorrow at the gambling casino in Oklahoma with my 83 year old great aunt and perky mother so night-night and good morning!
ReplyDeleteIt's ads and music for me. I find both distracting while trying to read posts, invariably I give up.
ReplyDeleteBryn sends Baxter much support on the diet front. Hot weather here has meant minimal walks so he is on reduced rations too.
Your blog is always a blast and so much fun.
ReplyDeleteI hate music too
or rather music I didn't ask for. My spelling and grammar are often awful though.
Greetings from chilly NY!
I guess I better put a message back on my sidebar about my comments having to be moderated. I'd hate it if someone didn't comment just because they have to put in a code.
ReplyDeleteThe sad thing about the otherwise enjoyable and VERY convenient and easy and quick internet is that if I don't enable comment moderation on my blog, I get five comments in Arabic, an Asian language or a porn site, popping up in my comments thread while I'm off at my job or something, and then, after they've corroded my comments thread, I have to go in a delete them, after which Blogger insists on showing a notice saying that the blog administrator has deleted the comment.
There's just no reason to have either enraging comments from spammers, OR blogger notices in my comments thread. So. I've had to moderate comments.
I totally agree on boring platitudes in comments, too. If you don't have time to read the blog post, you shouldn't have time to comment on it!
I love the images - and I'm glad you're willing to share!
ReplyDeleteI can relate to a lot of what you detest. I am probably guilty of a few things myself, but who's perfect..hehe.
ReplyDeleteThe worst for me is the music that plays automatically...I have liked blogs and stopped visitng all together caused its so damn annoying.
This post totally rocked and the pictures along with it suited to a tee.
Love the pictures. What a find. Love the commentary too. Your posts always make me smile.
ReplyDeleteStay true.
I've never been here before but you made me nervous! I read every single word and I'm sure I must be guilty of at least a couple of those. I am about to advertise...in a nice way..not intrusive.(I hope)
ReplyDeleteI HAVE been guilty of whining. Well who else will listen?
I would never have music though I hate it.
My other pet hate because I find it very difficult is white writing on a black background. And Americanisms on English blogs such as 'gotten'.
I enjoyed yours.
I'm listening and love your blog, but now I need to go and deal with my own "blog guilt"!
ReplyDeleteOh, please, how can we make this post mandatory reading??? -Jayne
ReplyDeleteSuper post and I am sure I am guilty of a few blog misdemeanors - who knows?...but mostly I hate, HATE the MUSIC too!
ReplyDeletebut since I have to type word verification for yours, I dont feel too bad!
Ha! Funny! So true, so true. I hate the music, too. I think it is rude to impose on me without asking. I hate the ads, too. So annoying. I think YOUR blog is "awesome" and clever, too!

This was a fun read!
ReplyDeleteIt took me a while to start blogging, some blogs are just so self indulgent.
I am not too good a stringing words together and I do not feel like sharing my personal life with the world.
Thanks for sharing:)
Wendy
Couldn't have said it better myself. I agree with all of it. although I am guilty of one thing: music, which is there only for me if the truth be told.
ReplyDeleteOtherwise, I'm with you all the way.
If I like a blog, I'm not very critical of it (unlike how critical I am of other kinds of writing).
ReplyDeleteI love how free the blogosphere is from those criticial voices I already hear so much.
But one variable, if I like a blog, is
when the blogger NEVER responds to comments at all.
Then I assume they don't care about comments.
It becomes more like reading a newspaper rather than engaging with a fellow blogger, which is OK.
I keep reading, if I like the blog, but I stop commenting.
ha ha! Awesome!! You've pretty much made an 'Idiot's guide to Blogging'. That post is worth publishing!!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Grrl, for stopping by my blog and asking me to clarify what I mean about responding or not to comments.
ReplyDeleteBeing asked to think more deeply about what I mean is rather a treat!
Your question(s)really got me thinking, and after some more blogging discussions, I realized that what I really want when I comment on someone's blog is *some* sort of reciprocity.
As you point out, that can happen in the comments section, but can also take the form of e-mails or IRL or many other forms.
Personally, I like it when discussions happen for all to see in the comments section, but for various reasons some people prefer other places, which is also fine with me.
I was thinking of my experience with a small number of bloggers who simply don't reciprocate at all---or at least to me.
Maybe they just don't like me, but it's so hard to know how to interpret total silence... I'd rather be told to bug off than to hear nothing at all.
THanks for sparking my thoughts!
Thanks Fresca,
ReplyDeleteYou had me worried there for a sec, as i almost never post here in the comments section, as I almost never go back to a comment once made.
I know what you mean about the total silence, and I've grown a thicker skin over time.
I cant expect everyone to "get" me, nor would I want to. Imagine being so watered down and commercial that everyone thought you were fab?
Ughh.
One of my fave blogs does not allow comments, but she lurks, and you feel her presence occasionally.
cheers for responding...
This sounds too much like "Blog Police" to me or that certain group of seventh grade girls who decided who's in and who's out. It's a free ride, just don't stop where you don't want to go and stop whining.
ReplyDeleteOne the other hand, I agree with a lot of your points and had fun reading them. ;-)
Regarding hurdles to jump to leave a comments, I see even you have word verification. It makes sense, especially after one has been hit by something like 140 comments in one night, left by a robot.
Great! Loved it! I agree with the music on blogs - I left a blog the other day as I was playing my own music and the music they deemed I had to listen to was playing over the top, I stopped it, then when i went to comment, it started again, so I stopped it, then when I went back to the main page, it started again... too much hard work.
ReplyDeleteWhite writing on black makes my eyes bleed.... though when I was a new blogger, I was guilty of that... thought it looked cool until I actually went and tried to read my own blog...
Oh, and I am guilty of referring to my hubby as "DH".... mmmm... maybe should stop that one...
I love the buttons I've seen on a few blogs asking not to be given rewards. Love them!
In need of a friendly word a vibrant imagination and beautiful colours.....i found your blog LUCKY... LOVE IT
ReplyDeleteI see inspiration from one of my favourite artists, Julie Arkell in the little papier mache pooch.
I'm off to knit another of my crazy critters. Thanks for the ZING x
gosh there is so much to take in and to think about. I agree with so much and am guilty of a few. i agree with the LOL idea. it just takes away from continuing to write properly. i have the music, but i only put on soft music. but i like the idea of putting up a little notice at the top letting bloggers know that they are free to pause or stop the music freely. Gosh, I think I may take down my awards... i'll have to think about this one. I truly loathe the bloggers that whine. I agree with the comment here that we all have problems and I think most of us come to the blogging world for a break and for fun, not to leave more depressed than when we started reading. complainers about everything. thank you for sharing and giving me food for thought. I think I will go and make a few changes now!
ReplyDeleteRoyal regards,
Daisy
So many blogs so little time! I don't like bad color coordination, music of any kind, its way to personal. Long winded posts. I just like stopping by and seeing what other people are creating and thats about it. Though I do use lol myself and my spelling is horrible so can't really complain about those ones!
ReplyDeleteHello i hate blogs as well i dont like the blogs with moderation ,they are so bad i hate them.
ReplyDeleteawesome;)
ReplyDelete
