Adelaide is my home town, but don't force me to admit it too often.
This week it is looking verdant and cold as I reconnoiter the mall
looking for likely guerrilla targets.

Anyone introducing a new product to the country tests it here.
Adelaidians are fairly impervious to marketing tricks and remain
un- seducable to the next new thing. The multitude of mullets and root perms
attest to this. If it sells in Adelaide it will sell anywhere.
The mid winter solstice is cold and I have not felt my toes
for two hours. I am punishing my father for
not turning up the heating at home and he is now enlisted.
He is lookout and camera operator. He isn't too sure about this
and his eyes are swiveling about his head.
I have to give him a stern look.

Adelaidians studiously ignore me, except for one guy with a
camera who swears he isn't a creep. He lends an air of credibility
to the stitching, and my father looks relieved.
Nearby are the famous silver balls - affectionately known
as the Malls' Balls, by sculptor Bert Flugleman, Bert is
into shiny big curvy things
and I get to kit a cover for one of his pieces
in Wollongong in November.

Guerilla knitting..... it's 2009's answer to the pet rock.
It's all just a flash in the pan, really.
As father explains, the term comes from the old muzzle loading,
flint lock rifles. He makes them from scratch, you see.

When dad slides the 1851 barrel into his intricately carved stock,
you can hear the air whooshing out. To hold this gun is to
wonder how anyone could have survived any war.
And to fire it....
well..
A muzzle loader requires a small amount of gunpowder to lie
in the "pan" while a flint is snapped over it and creates a spark.
You get the term "bright spark" for this as well.

You get the term "bright spark" for this as well.If all goes well, the flint scratches light into gunpowder, whooshes down
the barrel and you have a shot fired. Many times however it fails,
where by there is a spark of hope but little result.
Hence, "flash in the pan".

Now Dad, let's go home, cut loose and put in another light bulb so I can
actually see what I am knitting and have the heat on enough so beanie wearing
is not essential indoors, or I'll punish you
again by cleaning the pantry.

This knit up is so pretty -- and what a dashing accomplice you have:) I hope that it gets warmer for you and you don't freeze your buns off. It's finally warming up here for the summer!
fabulous....just what family are for! I love the whole concept behing your blog...amazingly refreshing and enriching....the world is better place with grrl + dog!
cheers,
Sophie
love this guerrilla knitting, man it's cool
Oh no! We were in the Mall both yesterday and today and if I had seen it I would have KNOWN that you had been there..... but we weren't that far down.
Thanks for warming our Mall.
That there is a very beautifully knitted piece of knit graffiti. VERY beautifully knitted.
Your dad doesn't LOOK like a gun toting dude.
Thanks for using words like "verdant" which I haven't ever heard used except in a Van Morrison song.
And what great fun to have your dad join you in the guerrilla world.
BTW, those shots me remind me of my hometown which I haven't seen in years, SF ; (
Cheers!
Congrats on surviving a guerilla attack on Adelaide...it's a weirdo place that...with a dark underbelly that I don't enjoy...thank god you're there adding a bit of worldly glamor and wit....your dad looks like a sweetie and just hope you've whipped him into shape over the lighting and heating....is he a virgo...they can't help themselves...but can be coaxed along for those they love....take care....
Dad, Dad - You have to turn the heat up for guests.
What a sweet outing.
Wow, so you have a third project oublic works lined up? Very exciting
Its just fun to visit here. Happy Fathers Day to you and your Dad.
I'm fairly certain my husband would love to spend hours with your dad. :)
Nice balls!
I can't think of a better activity to spend with my father...
Your dad is adorable... I love that you work (and play) together and your city is so lucky to have you... Roxanne
On a first visit I love your blog.
Have done some free-form knitting in the past.
Wonderful!!! I feel so enriched and energised after this post. It's like you're vandalising Adelaide with the softness of wool. Such a poetic duo!
well done for jazzing up old Adders...i'll have to go and see how those stripes are faring when i get back from steamy Ohio next week...
BTW have been knitting assiduously on spoons all the way across America....how long does that thing have to be?
I love that you have brightened boring old Adelaide, well done.
Hope your dad turned up the heating and popped in a 100 watt light bulb!
thank you for dropping by grrl! I liked your comments and I LOVE your site. I am now planning acts of knitting peacefare! We have a huge sculpture at the waterfront in Halifax called The Wave and I think it might be nice with a toque! very Canadjun as we say. also perhaps our two bridges that span the city of Halifax and Dartmouth could use a little sparking up. My trouble is come the summer (which it is here) I don't want to knit. Yes, I'm a foul-weather knitter. Perhaps I could make huge dollies for something - dolly making is not seasonal, just sporadic.
Talk at ya later! Wish we could meet for a guiness in Dingle Town in that crazy pub across from the church.
Jan (Crazy Jane)
A splice of red, pink & mauve, just want the mall needed. I hope it's hanging there brightly when I do a family visit in 2 months. Dad looks to be in to it too, have you got him on the needles yet ?
cheers
Smmmmmmmokin'! As in lock, stock and smoking barrel!
Adelaid- passed through there once and I sort of remember it...would have been more impressed, I suppose, had I seen knitted poles!
gotta love a knitup at a mall! - what I'm really loving is your writing and how it is developing - I'm feeling a book coming - your dad looks like a good guy!
shouldn't your new recruit be wearing a balaclava? can't wait to see all your public art stuff come together. am i too late to do the knitting for the poles? sorry I'm sooooo behind with everything. and when is that etsy shop opening? and please remember to still speak to us when u get even more mega famous. brilliant.
What ahnadsome accomplice you have and what a good sport!!
Oh yeah the knit is pretty too!!!
glad that you are having fun despite the chill!!
Big hugs!
Elizabeth

i am just pointing this out to you
in case
you did not know...
{{ i do not have a muzzle loader
but being a southern girl
i DO have other fire*arms
which i take apart
and clean myself
even though i do not knit }}
Hey, it wasn't VM and posted the song I was thinking of with "verdant" in it ; )
Cheers!
how sweet of you to take you Dad out on a good romp and bit of knitting warfare and "recon" - should I knit him a pet rock out of flint leftover from my gun? he sure is cute for a being your "Dad"
takes to that radical craft quite well, I think
we shall have him joining the knit corps in no time!
Love the knits and the humor. Way to go, Aussie Girl!
