Do you have a morning ritual?
Mine is spent trying to coax my ornery hound onto the bed for a cuddle.
That's right, on the bed.
You'd think it would be a luxury to be allowed there, let alone
stroked and chatted to while mum wakes up with a cup of tea.
This morning as I picked another flea off my arm I pondered life's gifts.
Ten years ago this was hound.

He was thrown away in a plastic shopping bag and left for dead. The vet
said he was a goner, and it was the gentle and loving heart of the
vet nurse who took him home every night to close his fly blown sores,
let him feed and help his fur grow back that he is alive today.
Baxter was my first case as a foster mother for animal rescue,
and the reason I was sure I'd burst into tears
when I met Bernie Berlin.
In fact I avoided her.
She chased me.
On the last day we chatted. Of course about dogs. If you have been
living under a rock for the last five years you may not know that the very talented
ms Berlin owns and runs a doggy rescue in Tennessee. Not only that
she conducts raids on puppy factories with the help of the ASPCA and rescues
drained mother dogs and their produce.
Every cent she earns teaching very cool and contemporary art skills
goes to finance her passion.
She is unassuming, hilarious and tiny.
And I didn't cry.
Almost.
Which is why I spent three days with Stephanie Lee
learning how to solder and make magic with metal.

learning how to solder and make magic with metal.
This would be the third attempt to make friends with metal. If I had a dollar
for every time a jewellers saw snapped in my hand, or a new style manicure
was created with a file or bench grinder I'd buy myself a new manicure.
Some things simply have to be experienced. Like a sunset, a kiss or a fresh
oyster sliding down your throat; metal soldering is one of these.

Like a kiss, it can't be rushed. The perfect moment when solder races
toward it's lover is only achieved by careful heating of the base. Short
cuts end in lonely globs.
Like a sunset it's moment is brief but beautiful then one begins the process anew.
When solder slides onto metal the planets align and angels sing.
Or something like that. For a while I made blackened lonely globstill the alchemy kicked in. The divine rhythm, the magic formulae that
cant really be taught, but shown. And Stephanie coaxed me on.
I made chain links soldered together, mixed with found jewellery and a doll leg.Another chain appeared sporting a tiny silver salt shaker.
I was happy.

Solder flowed like molten chocolate and the book was created.
Still officially a WIP, it is a testimony to the "aha" point at which one gains a new skill.
By now another flea has jumped into the mug of tea and it's timeto walk my furry muse. He is glad the routine is back
to normal and I still smell the same.
Dog arrived ten years ago with a matching set of luggage. Boy,
did he have luggage. Friends said I was mad to take such a dog.
They were right. I was mad.
We were both mad together, and we saved each other.
His mum went to Bali and all he got was a stupid dog t shirt.
He will put up with the t shirt but he wont be cuddled.

So pleased that you and dog found each other all those years ago...I had a cat that saved my sanity once so can relate!...and all the work in this post! such a visual feast..it's just wonderful...the journal...the jewellery...the book...
You are lovely. I didn't realise you were avoiding Bernie. Love the jewelery. Thanks for my pressie.
When I was 5 years old, my Pa came home with a tiny black mongrel ( from the market). We called him Baxter.
You have brought memories flooding back. Your hound was fortunate indeed to find you.
The alchemy of metal. You are inspiring.
What would we do without our wonderful dogs and all of their baggage??? Your necklace is wonderful- so glad that you got the feel for the flow!! The book is divine and can't wait to see some more Pix??
Hugs to you!

oh man, dog was a mess, but he is quite the looker now.
ain't love grand?
happy days,
joanie
p.s. the necklace you made is truly gorgeous.
There's a dog named Baxter in our town who is currently in quarantine because he bit someone. I wonder if he wasn't tormented by the neighbor children as some neighbors suggested. I hope there is a happy ending to his story. So happy there are people like Bernie. So glad you saved this dog and he saved you. - Jeanne
your work, which is your life, is all so wonderfully FULL - the dog, the messy metal - nothing perfect but the end result IS perfection....love a cup of tea in the morning myself- was off to do just that but the computer beckoned
One of my favorite post of yours. It sounds as if your hound might have a little cat in him. I like the peach and silver necklace, and long to know what is in the book. If you were twelve inches tall, you would be welding instead of soldering...Is this something you are likely to continue, and if so are you looking for silver bits? I like the new photo of you, it is edgy...figuratively, no, literally....aagh!
My cat is a stray I found.
oooo! metally goodness. it truly is zen isn't it? watching that solder flow. frustrating as ..erm.. (i was gonna use the eff word but uhm in the interest of blog harmony, won't ;) HECK when it just sits there like a lump on a bump. xoxo
beautiful work! tedious at best! Well done, you.
Pup is punishing you for sure! NEVER leave again...I think that is what he is about...I am leaving for three weeks next month- my pup will NEVER forgive me...
Your posts are so nice to read....a lovely way with words..and intresting...love your new jewelry and one question: How do you stop dogg from eating the new t-shirt? I have a bad dog... :)
I used to know a dog that ate the crotches out of eveyone's panties, so unless you are doing something weird with your t shirt... I am not sure...
i seriously doubt you could possibly be any more poetic ... with your craft, posts and the way you live. thank you. I needed that.
How amazing your journel looks ,Your work from Steph class is amazing I love the necklace you made really stunning.
Thank you so much for my Little gift you gave me at the retreat It was beautiful and right up my alley.
Your dog is gorgeous fleas and all
Lovely to meet ypu
Love your hair
Jen
Yay for coaxing dogs *back* into bed with you, fleas or no fleas! Ajax has hit that age where he wants to be up doing his own stuff in the morning...he just doesn't care if my butt is cold any more.
Damned critters.
Look at lil' dog! So tiny!
Like a 'goose' I sat here smiling at the computer screen while reading your post. Obviously I loved it.
Christina
Wow Denise you make soldering sound so romantic, I never usually think of it that way but from now on I'll think of you when the solder 'slides onto metal and the planets align'. Your necklace is beautiful, love the little salt shaker. Baxter wouldn't be a real dog either if he didn't have fleas.
grrrl, is Dog the puppy you showed us above.
I gasped when I read that. Stupid fuckers -- who could do that -- total disgusting pigs.
xoxo
That book is out of this world!
Wow, wow, wow!
Amazing post.
Great craftsmanship, lovely photos,
heartfelt expressions.
What a brilliant post.
I enjoyed reading it.

Beautiful story, beautiful dog.
Thanks to the universe for putting grrl and dog together to learn their flea bitten, furry love lessons. They are perfect for one another !
(Your metal work sounds like a new magic. How wonderful that you found such a cool guide to take you there !)
grrl = dog; a love story! Makes me smile….we have 3 cats: all found us when they needed homes. I sometimes look at them and think we are so lucky to have this love in our lives (as a ball of cat hair wafts by). Speaking of love; your hair! And your new photo! Fun!
what a special dog who found a special friend :) I can't bear to watch animal rescue shows,I can't bear seeing the suffering of such helpless creatures. so I try and do my bit with donations and not buying factory farmed animals etc. Bless those who put the time in working to rescue them.
Beautiful jewellery. but not as cute as tiny dog. Sounds like you had a great time, both in Bali and in Melbourne.
I hope I am not being stuck with "the needle threader!!!" for the rest of my days...LOL
I wasn't feeling that way about soldering on the first day but by the last day YES!!! I went and got meself a grinder and big grrl torch!!! Haven't had a chance to play with it yet. I have an exhibition at easter time and have said i will bring 6 paintings......so far I have done .5.....Yes half of 1
Kirsty
Fantastic post... love how you describe metal play. The first day certainly didnt feel like that, but by the journal class I was loving my little butane torch (and wishing I had done all three of Stephanies classes instead of just two.... come back Stephanie). Love your salt shaker necklace grrl.
Awww.... the story of Dog...thanks for sharing. Such a special boy. I was shocked by his photos as a baby. Some people... I just cant fathom how anyone could do such a thing.
Thank goodness the planets aligned and you and Dog found each other.
This makes me cry. no kidding.
rock on with your bad solder self.
"We were both mad together, and we saved each other." That has got to be one of the most beautiful lines I have ever read!
Your necklace is simply stunning and so is that book! Definately worth the stuggle, by the looks of it all.
Nice post Bunz, you should be proud of that solder work.
hey grrl! - hound + you - it was destined - a total match! - you learned the magic of solder - your necklace is just stunning - the little doll leg being my fav - your book in process looks amazing!
Dog is so lucky that you found him.
I have a similar dog living here. You don't see her photo very often on my blog. Scout came to me from a kill shelter in Georgia at the 11th hour. She was covered with ticks and weighed in at 45 lbs. She's currently a hefty 95 lbs. Still, she's afraid of the camera, and the coffee maker, and the hair dryer, and . . . well, she's afraid of lots. I love Bernie too.
And Stephanie! You lucky girl!
Oh, btw, I love what you made. Good work! I think you've got it.
grrl...
you are the very best
come on over
the bed it littered
with cats
and Lu
the doxie
comes up too
she is just short
and needs a running jump...
reveling in all your glorious adventures
xox - eb.
ooooh I LOVE your necklace it's fabulous and your journal entry and the book is amazing too
LOVE your description of solder...as a worker with solder...i couldn't have said it more eloquently..(hope i spelled that right)
your jewelry turned out awesome and creative!!
love the leg
!!!
animals bring a lot to our worlds
it is sad so many abuse them
or abuse each other for that matter
but that is a whole nother story..
baxter grew into a very handsome young fella..10 isn't all that old
dawg had her puppies AI'd at 10 and all 12 thrived...still have 2
'baby and roach'...they are fox red yellow english labradors...i am sure more information than you really need
i feel chatty today
:)
my house is crawling with saved cats. people seem to think that flinging tortured kittens into farm paddocks is fun. grrrr.
on another note, the metalwork is delicious and i want to play too, please!
clearly
you have well~mastered
1--metal work
and
2--dog selecting.
:-)
that alone
would make me happy...
{{ i Love your links
as they look
like each ring
was sealed with a fat kiss.
what a wonderful necklace! }}
It looks as though you're doing pretty good there ; )
verification: metyl
really ; )
I am dizzy. You have me all over the place here .......dogs to love (come see my ball of fluff), Michael York, botox, INCREDIBLE jewelry.....I have been with Stephanie a few times, learned that fabulous chain trick with solder, went home and proceded to forget it.....journal pages.....o my.
Can't believe it's the same dog. Poor little thing....but how lucky to have found you.
I love your necklace but the book is what really wows me. A precious treasure!
Love your puppy story - I'm a sucker for strays :) but it's cats for me.
I volunteer at Crystal St Community Shop in Petersham. I think you mentioned the Newtown Neighbourhood Centre - lots of our regulars drop in there sometimes. We probably know some people in common :)
Fantastic book! Stunning post!
The necklace is achingly beautiful, so gold and silver, and your book, wow! what a lucky dog you have! Or is it you who is lucky? Roxanne
Dneeese - I am sitting here at work reading your blog and loving it.
You have a poetic way with words and I am enjoying reading your views on life. And admire your honesty about how you are feeling.
Like Jacky I can't believe that dear little Baxter had been so mistreaten as a pup. He looks very happy and healthy now. You have blessed his life with your kindness.
(I meant to meet Bernie at the retreat but ran out of time and then felt too shy to introduce myself).
Yout necklace is gorgeous...
P.S You described soldering so beautifully you have made me want to try it one day!
Congrats on conquering the metal beast! You did a fine job and dog looks like he thinks so too (even if he won't wear the tshirt!)
Fun! and Real! Great blog! Blessings from Amy.
